DEADLINE DILEMMA: INSPIRATION AND DEADLINES

Posted by: Denise McGaha

As a designer, I feel like I am immersed in inspiration on a daily basis.  However, I sometimes feel like I have no new ideas to generate in my busy head!!  These are the times that I have found tried and true ways to unlock the “writers block” in my design vision and unleash new and fresh ideas for each project.

When on a deadline and finding no way for ideas to flow I have found the best solution is:

To relax.  Whether through a massage, mani/pedi, or just a nap.  Once I give my brain a chance to relax, the ideas usually start flowing.  And often I will dream of the perfect design scheme or solution for a problem in my sleep.  Now that is being efficient!

Travel.  Sometimes all I need is a weekend getaway.  While I was in Scottsdale this weekend, I took the time to have a nice cup of tea on Sunday morning, breathe in deeply the serene landscaping and appreciate the beautiful architecture of the Arizona Biltmore.  I felt much better about tackling the mound of design projects when I returned to the office Monday and was ready to design again.

Online inspiration.  Pinterest is my obsession and I absolutely get lost in it.  Most of the time, my inspiration comes from fashion, food or color Pins…..not interiors.  You can follow me HERE and see what’s inspiring me today.

Shopping.  I do believe almost everything has its solution in shopping.  The cure for whatever ails you!!  A quick trip to my favorite design showrooms will often reveal a new fabric color scheme, furniture piece or better yet, a chat with my showroom salesperson who has the perfect solution to my dilemma.  At times, having a deadline alone can create panic and shut down.  Take the time to step away, if only for half an hour and find inspiration to get you moving again.  Staying focused on the negative can only perpetuate the issue.

After my weekend away, an evening "Pinning" and a shopping trip this afternoon, I am ready to tackle a new design project first thing tomorrow.  And boy does it have a tight deadline…..I will keep you posted.
