DEADLINE DILEMMA DESIGNING A SHOWHOUSE IN 30 DAYS

Posted by: Denise McGaha

I am so excited to be able to share the details about our State Fair Showhouse, The Remodeled Home of Tomorrow.

If you haven't seen the latest Design Guide, on newstands now, then maybe you missed some of the details.  So, here's a little behind the scenes scoop on how it all came together here.

I received a call in August from my associates at Dallas Renovation Group.  They had been asked to build the Remodeled Home of Tomorrow and needed a design plan...pronto.  We were to design and build the home in time for the opening of the State Fair of Texas in September.  That's a pretty tight timeline when there were no plans or pre-existing architectural styles to pull from.  At first, I thought it was a dream to have complete design freedom, but along the way, when we started working with donated product, that changed from day to day.  I started to decide that complete "free"-dom was more like it.

Last week I spoke about not being "attached" to design selections so you were ready for any backordered or discontinued product issues.  I had a great opportunity to experience how this feels first hand.  Our tile selections ALL changed along the way.  Each and every one.  Same for the countertops, lighting and plumbing.  Even the home architecture changed.  While in New York for Labor Day weekend celebrating my birthday, I received a call that our supplies for the exterior of the home would not be there.  That meant our home was to be sheltered by a TENT!  A TENT!!!!

Needless to say, not being attached took on a whole other meaning that day!  I began joking that our house was now a Yurt.

Only laughter gets you through what sometimes seems insurmountable.

Once I got used to the fact that our structure once you got inside, would be exactly as it had been designed, I got over the tent.  What could I do anyway, but move forward?

We began working with our partners (more on this later in the week) to complete our design.  This meant tile designs, cabinetry, furnishings, drapery and window coverings, wall treatments, plumbing, decorative lighting, fine art and more.

There were those who thought there was NO way we could carry off this Design With a Deadline, but with a daily calendar and goals set, we were able to design (and re-design) all of our showhouse in perfect harmony with the opening of The State Fair.  I had great partners in Dallas Renovation Group who executed my every idea.  From a wall of reclaimed wood, provided by New Life Hardwoods, to the intricate chevron floor pattern, they saw to it that all of my ideas were presented exactly as I had envisioned them.

From my team at Denise McGaha Interiors to Dallas Renovation Group and their contractors, to the team at The Home of Tomorrow, I had a wonderful support group as we experienced the development of this amazing home in an amazingly tight timeline.  All week I will be giving you details of the home and details you may have missed if you visited!
